The Undergraduate Neuroscience Education:
Interactions, Interdisciplines, and Curricular Best Practices
Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota
July 18-20, 2008
Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN), in partnership with
Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL), has sponsored four previous workshops
focused on developing and sustaining undergraduate neuroscience
programs. FUN and PKAL are pleased to announce a fifth FUN workshop July
18-20, 2008 at Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota.
At the first (1995) workshop participants developed four blueprints to
guide faculty in their efforts to enrich undergraduate curricula by
developing interdisciplinary courses and programs in the emerging
discipline of Neuroscience. Using these blueprints as a foundation,
participants at the second (1998) and third (2001) workshops explored
cutting-edge exercises designed to build investigative, discovery-based
laboratory experiences and launch regional meetings emphasizing
undergraduate neuroscience research. The fourth (2005) PKAL/FUN workshop
also featured new laboratory experiences, developed leadership skills,
and revisited the four original curricular blueprints--adding a fifth
blueprint in neuroscience studies to address the directions that
neuroscience is headed in the coming decades.
The 2008 FUN workshop will explore a wide range of topics, including new
laboratory experiences emphasizing discovery-based learning,
incorporating community outreach into neuroscience education, and
programming focused on the development of interdisciplinary coursework
and curricular innovations to ensure that undergraduate education in
neuroscience remains vibrant well into the future.
More information will be forthcoming shortly. Please mark these
important dates in your calendar, watch for announcements with schedule
information and registration details, and plan to attend!

New Directory of Undergraduate Neuroscience Programs. Check it out and please help correct and refine the information!
FUN member, Robert, Calin-Jageman, has developed a directory of undergraduate neuroscience programs at http://nsmajor.homeip.net
. Please check out this website and help refine the information about your programs and institution!
From: Robert Calin-Jageman [mailto:rcalinjageman@dom.edu
]
Subject: Directory of Undergraduate Neuroscience Programs
I'm working on founding a neuroscience major at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois. I wanted to canvas the programs offered at other institutions, and I was surprised to find it rather difficult to determine which schools do/don't offer a neuroscience major.
I ended up writing some automated scripts to harvest a comprehensive list of undergraduate neuroscience programs. Basically, the bot searched Google for "neuroscience major" and "neuroscience program" within the domain of every higher ed institution I could identify. Programs were identified as possible if they returned 1-2 hits, likely if they returned > 2 hits. The top hit was logged as the program url. This netted 185 likely and 177 possible programs, nationwide (from 747 institutions).
As this seems like it might be a useful resource for other FUN faculty members, I've posted the resulting directory online at http://nsmajor.homeip.net
The online directory can be queried by institution type, state, and the likelihood of having a program. Links to the institution and program are provided.
Because web harvesting is always imperfect, I have added a feature to let others suggest changes to the directory (e.g., if I missed a program, falsely identified a program, and/or harvested the wrong URL for a program). You can help greatly improve this list if you take a moment to find your home institution and suggest any necessary changes.
If this would be useful for FUN, I'd be glad to mirror this for the FUN website, or just have it linked in.
Thanks!
Bob

WHAT IS THE REAL URL FOR THE FUN WEBSITE?
In fact, there are many ways to get to the FUN website, but all of them lead to the same place. The shortest route to FUN is <funfaculty.org
>. Persons who like to type and enjoy multi-syllabic speaking and spelling (and think others enjoy it too!) prefer the <www.undergraduateneuroscience.org
> address.
Whether you prefer funfaculty.org
or undergraduateneuroscience.org
, you'll still have the same FUN once you get there!
