SEED - Scholarships to Enhance and Empower Diversity

Hi everyone,

I am committed to promoting increased diversity in STEM, especially in neuroscience. I wanted to let you know about a way that you can support this effort.

Being affiliated with FUN, you are well-informed; so I think you know that funding for training under-represented, minority graduates in biological sciences has plummeted in recent years and numbers are stagnant.  It is unlikely in the current political environment that the federal government will develop or implement new programs in the near future. In response, a number of us neuroscientists, including John Hildebrand, Erich Jarvis, Joe Martinez, Ken Maynard, and Jim Townsel, are developing a perpetual fund, i.e., the Scholarships to Enhance and Empower Diversity (SEED) fund, to serve as a private source to support merit-based training and personalized mentoring.  The endowment fund will allow the development of a week long program at the MBL.  The program focuses on assisting underrepresented minority Ph. Ds, postdoctoral fellows, and newly hired faculty to achieve professional success, including  the acquisition of independent research support.

The SEED Fund will be administered by the American Psychological Foundation, which is responsible for over $17,000,000 in net assets annually and charges no administrative fees; therefore, your entire tax-deductible donation goes to the SEED fund. To date we have raised approximately $127,000 almost entirely from individuals who are committed to diversity.

I am hoping that you would you consider a personal donation to this fund. Any amount will help us, but we need to raise an additional $123,000 in order to establish our program.  Therefore, I am hoping that you would consider a donation, which if you prefer can be spread over 5 years. There is also a link to an online donation form below. This can be used for one-time donations. Please let me know if you make a contribution so that I can make certain that it is properly attributed to our fund. And remember that ANY amount is appreciated!

If you have any questions or concerns, I would be happy to discuss this by phone at your convenience.

Check out this website for additional information including, including a link to the online donation form and the names of those on the SEED organizing committee and individuals who have already donated to the fund:

Thanks in advance for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.
Warmly,
Charles
